Exciting news – we have earned our Bronze Star under the PA Forward Libraries Pilot Program!!!!
Our next step is to start the process of earning 5 silver stars – one for each of the 5 Literacies: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic and Social Literacy, Health Literacy and Financial Literacy.
This morning we’d like to discuss the first of those literacies:
Why is Basic Literacy important?
Did you know that:
- Only 48% of parents read to their preschoolers daily.
- Eighty-five percent of all juveniles interfacing with the court system are functionally illiterate.
- A child’s library use raises his or her fourth grade assessment scores.
- Thirteen percent of Pennsylvanians lack basic literacy skills such as the ability to read a newspaper or brochure. This percentage of Pennsylvanians who struggle with basic literacy remains unchanged from 1992.
- More than 75% of jobs in Pennsylvania demand education beyond high school. And yet, nearly 120,000 Pennsylvania youth ages 16-24 have dropped out of high school.
- Fifty percent of the nation’s unemployed youth ages 16-21 are functional illiterates with virtually no prospects of obtaining good jobs.
Increasing basic literacy across the state would empower a stronger workforce which would achieve a higher tax base, economy and population.

The Wyalusing Public Library is now part of the PA Forward Pilot program.
PA Forward will promote and benefit all libraries. For academic libraries, the campaign will strengthen the public’s perception that academic institutions provide great benefits to their local communities by sharing resources and services with the community as well as students and faculty. For school libraries, PA Forward will reinforce what experience tells us – that students in schools with strong libraries learn more, get better grades, and achieve higher test scores than their peers without libraries.
For public libraries, PA Forward will position them as essential to a growing customer base of private and municipal organizations and individuals. It will also position them as high-quality early learning providers that ultimately save taxpayer dollars otherwise needed for remedial programs.
If you are interested in learning more, you can go to the PA Forward website at http://www.paforward.org/ for more information.
